#111: Passing and Movement

60 min8–20 playersU12U14U16DevelopingAdvanced

A three-part session for ages 12–15 focusing on passing in open space. Starts with a competitive passing-through-defenders warm-up in an end-zone format. Progresses to a 5v5 possession game where teams score by passing through gates. Concludes with a creative 2+2v2+2 multi-team game with colour-coded goals.

Warm Up~10 min

Passing through defenders: Create a pitch with two end zones and a middle defensive zone. Start 2+2v2 (two passers in each end zone, two defenders in the middle); increase to 3s or 4s as players improve. End-zone players pass to each other, create space, then time a pass through the middle zone to the other end. Defenders intercept; intercepting team swaps with the end that lost the ball. Competition: start with 10 points; lose one point each time you must go in the middle. Easier: allow rolling or throwing the ball. Harder: require a first-time pass through the middle.

  • How can you create space in the middle by passing in the end zones?
  • What type of passes can you use to be successful through the middle?
  • If defending, can you predict the pass?
  • Can you combine with teammates to score in the correct colour goals?
  • Can you quickly recognise the goals you need to defend?

Main Activity~50 min

Skill dev — 5v5 on passing goals: Two equal teams. Distribute multiple small cone gates across the pitch. Teams retain possession and score a point by completing a successful pass through a gate. First team to 10 points wins. Easier: start with throw-and-catch; wider gates. Harder: narrower gates; use weaker foot; add a second ball. Game application — 2+2v2+2: Four teams, each with its own colour-coded goal to defend. Coach chooses two colours to combine and attack the other two teams' goals. Alternatively: three teams combine against one (single team scores in any of the three goals, worth 3 points; three teams together score in the one goal). Easier: large pitch and goals; 2v2 format. Harder: each team nominates a goalkeeper.
