60 min8–16 playersU8U10U12BeginnerDeveloping

A session for ages 8–12 focused on dribbling skill and spatial awareness. The warm-up is a team dribbling relay through colour-coded gates. The skill development is a team relay around coloured cones with a nominated defender blocking. The game is a 6v6 (4v4 in practice) on four wide goals encouraging dribbling in 1v1 situations.

Warm Up~10 min

Shooting (dribbling relay) circuit: Four teams in corners of a square. Each team has a colour; same-coloured gates inside the square. Players relay: dribble through their colour gate, return for the next player. Teams must complete all their colour gates, then others. Can also do in pairs: dribble and pass through gates. Easier: simple race without balls; introduce movement variations (hopping, skipping). Harder: more gates; smaller gates.

  • Can you dribble quickly with the ball under control?
  • Show me a trick where you turn on the ball
  • Keep your head up when dribbling to avoid others
  • In which areas of the pitch should you take risks and dribble?
  • Can you show me different ways of tricking your opponents?

Relay easier: no balls; introduce physical movements (hop, skip)Relay harder: additional cones to dribble around; blocker defendersGame easier: 5v3 so one team has more spaceGame harder: fewer players on one side; conditions on scoring
Main Activity~50 min

Skill dev — 3v3 with different number of goals (colour relay with defender): Four teams in corners; colour-coded cones inside square. Players relay: dribble around their colour cone, then around the whole square. Each team nominates one defender to delay dribblers. Easier: simple race without balls. Harder: more cones to dribble around; add blocker defenders. Game application — 6v6 game: Mini-pitches for 4v4 with two mini-goals at each end in wide positions. Normal football with a dribbling focus. Can players dribble past a player in a 1v1? If not, pass to a team-mate in space to dribble and score. Easier: 5v3 overload. Harder: fewer players on one team; conditions on scoring.
