TITLE: 4v4 Soccer to a Small Gate

PLAYERS: 8 players

TAGS: U5, U6, U7, U8, U9, U10, U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, U16, U18, 5-a-side, Beginner, Developing, Advanced, Passing, Dribbling, Defending, Small-Sided Games

DESCRIPTION: The smallest version of a full-sided game that covers all aspects of match play — attacking, defending, passing, receiving, supporting, penetrating, and spreading the field.

OBJECTIVES:
- Develop attacking principles: penetration, support, width
- Practice defensive principles: pressure, cover, balance
- Improve vision, communication, and decision-making

EQUIPMENT: Cones (for 40x25 yard grid and gate goals), Soccer balls

MAIN ACTIVITY: Create a grid approximately 40x25 yards. Create a gate (about 8 feet wide) on each end line. Divide into two teams of four. Field dimensions emphasise passing and playing the ball forward early. Each team defends a small gate. A goal is scored by stopping the ball inside the gate along the end line. When a team reaches 5 goals, switch out players or teams. Alternatively, create an end line with cones and score by stopping the ball anywhere along the endline.

COACHING POINTS:
- Offensive: maintain vision with head on a pivot; communicate verbally and non-verbally; use the full playing area for support angles; appropriate first touch; change direction and speed of play
- Defensive: sound pressure/cover/balance principles; get players behind the ball; good communication

PROGRESSIONS:
- Adjust field size to maximise effectiveness: larger for possession focus, smaller for defending compactness
