TITLE: #84 Communication is Key PLAYERS: 8–20 players DURATION: 60 minutes TAGS: U8, U10, U12, 7-a-side, 5-a-side, Beginner, Developing, Fitness, Small-Sided Games DESCRIPTION: A session centered on verbal and non-verbal communication and trust between players, using a blindfold format. The warm-up involves pairs with one player blindfolded and guided by a partner while dribbling. The skill development is a small-sided game where only blindfolded players touch the ball. The session concludes with a free 5v5 with player-elected captains. OBJECTIVES: - Build trust and communication skills between teammates - Develop leadership and the ability to give clear guidance - Introduce concepts of active listening and verbal direction in football EQUIPMENT: balls, blindfolds (one per two players), bibs, goals WARM UP: Players work in pairs; one wears a blindfold and dribbles the ball slowly while the sighted partner guides them verbally, warning of obstacles and other players. Partners swap roles regularly. Safety: sighted player must guide at all times; all players must be respectful. MAIN ACTIVITY: Skill development — blindfolded small-sided game: Each pair has one sighted guide and one blindfolded player. Teams of three pairs plus goalkeepers play a small-sided game. Only blindfolded players may touch the ball. Sighted players guide by holding hands (no dragging) and giving continuous verbal instructions. Swap who wears the blindfold regularly. Game application: Free 5v5 on mini-pitches (no more than 5v5). Players elect a captain; no referee. The two captains ensure rules are followed fairly. Coaches rotate captains frequently so all players experience leadership. COACHING POINTS: - As a guide: give clear, calm, simple instructions — left, right, stop, go - As a blindfolded player: trust your partner and keep the ball close - Communication should be continuous, not just reactive - In the free game: encourage players to self-organise and use leadership skills PROGRESSIONS: - Easier warm-up: use a larger space; slower pace - Harder warm-up: blindfolded player must reach a target or score a goal - Skill dev easier: 1v1 or 2v2 format; use a ball that makes a sound - Skill dev harder: guides must be silent — only goalkeepers may communicate - Game application harder: limit the number of touches; add scoring conditions
