TITLE: 1v1 Madness

PLAYERS: 6–12 players

DURATION: 55 minutes

DESCRIPTION: A U6 technical ball control session focused on 1v1 situations, dribbling, shielding and close control. Players progress from a fun warm-up game through structured 1v1 practices to free small-sided games.

OBJECTIVES:
- Develop confident dribbling and close ball control in 1v1 situations
- Improve shielding, body protection and first touch when receiving under pressure
- Encourage scanning, quick decision-making and explosive movement with the ball

EQUIPMENT: cones, balls (one per outfield player), bibs for defenders, balls, bibs (two colours), goals or target gates, bibs, small goals

WARM UP: Warm Up: Bulldog

Objective: Get players moving with the ball, introduce dribbling under pressure and develop juggling as a fun consequence activity

Set up a 30 x 20m dribbling zone with two keepy-up zones at each end. Two defenders are positioned inside the main dribbling zone. All other players have a ball and must dribble from one end to the other, attempting to get past the far line without losing their ball. If a defender kicks a player's ball out of the zone, that player must move to a keepy-up zone and practise juggling until a winner is found in the dribbling zone. The last player remaining in the dribbling zone wins the round.

MAIN ACTIVITY: Technical: 1v1 Battle Zone

Objective: Develop shielding, scanning and quick passing when playing in tight 1v1 situations in a central area

Set up a large circle of players split into two teams (alternate bibs). One player from each team starts in the middle of the circle, creating a 1v1 battle. Wall players remain on the outside of the circle. The two players in the middle compete to score points — a player earns 1 point each time they receive a pass from a wall player of their own team and successfully pass on to another wall player in their team. Rotate the middle players regularly so everyone gets time in the centre.

---

Technical: 1v1 Back to Goal

Objective: Develop first touch, body protection, feints and the ability to spin away from a defender to create a shooting opportunity

Set up multiple small practice areas, each with a goal or target. In each area, a blue attacker is positioned with their back to goal, closely marked by a red defender. A blue wall player starts a short distance away with a ball. The wall player passes to the blue attacker, who must use a spin or turn to get behind the red defender and score. If the red defender wins the ball back, they score a point by dribbling over the start line. Rotate roles regularly so all players experience both attacking and defending.

---

Small-Sided Game: 3v3 Games

Objective: Allow players to express themselves and apply skills from the session in a free, game-realistic environment

Organise players into 3v3 games on small pitches with goals. Play flows freely with minimal stoppages. The coach observes and allows the game to develop naturally, offering encouragement rather than instruction. Rotate teams as needed to ensure all players get adequate game time.

COACHING POINTS:
- Keep the ball close and use your body to protect it
- Look up to spot the defenders before they get close
- Use changes of speed and direction to beat defenders
- Scanning — check your shoulders before receiving to know where defenders and teammates are
- Shielding — use your body to protect the ball and create space
- Quick passing — play early and accurately to keep the ball moving
- First touch — cushion the ball and set it in the direction you want to go
- Arm out for protection — use your arm to feel the defender and create a barrier
- Feints — use a shoulder drop or fake movement to unbalance the defender
- Explosive escape — accelerate away from the defender immediately after the turn and finish quickly
- Let the players make decisions and solve problems themselves
- Encourage effort and bravery in 1v1 situations
- Praise positive attempts to use skills from the session

PROGRESSIONS:
- Increase the number of defenders to raise the challenge
- Reduce the size of the dribbling zone to increase pressure
- Allow defenders to use both feet to make dispossessing harder
- Add a time limit to increase urgency
- Allow wall players to move along the circle to create more passing angles
- Increase to 2v2 in the middle for older or more advanced groups
- Allow the defender to apply earlier pressure to make the turn harder
- Add a second defender to increase the challenge for more advanced players
- Change the angle of the pass to vary the starting position
- Introduce a rule rewarding goals scored after a successful 1v1 dribble with a bonus point
- Reduce pitch size to increase 1v1 opportunities
- Play without goalkeepers to encourage shooting and attacking play
