TITLE: 1v1 Madness PLAYERS: 6–16 players DURATION: 55 minutes DESCRIPTION: A U6 technical ball control session focused on 1v1 dribbling, shielding, and turning skills. Players progress from a warm-up dribbling game through isolated 1v1 scenarios before finishing with free small-sided games. OBJECTIVES: - Develop individual dribbling and ball control under pressure - Improve shielding, scanning, and 1v1 turning techniques - Build confidence in 1v1 situations both with and without the ball EQUIPMENT: cones, balls (one per outfield player), bibs for defenders, balls, bibs (two colours), small goals or targets, bibs, small goals WARM UP: Warm Up: Bulldog Objective: Engage players in a fun, competitive dribbling warm-up that introduces the concept of protecting the ball and beating a defender Set up a 30x20m dribbling zone with two keepy-up zones at either end. All outfield players start with a ball and attempt to dribble past the far line without a defender kicking their ball out of the zone. Two defenders attempt to kick attackers' balls out. Any player who loses their ball to a defender must leave the dribbling zone and go to a keepy-up zone to practise juggling. Play continues until one dribbler remains — they are the winner. MAIN ACTIVITY: Technical: 1v1 Battle Zone Objective: Develop players' ability to receive and shield the ball under pressure, scan for teammates, and play quick passes in tight 1v1 situations Organise players in a circle with alternating bibs — two teams. Two players (one from each team) start in the middle. Wall players stay on the outside of the circle. The player in the middle scores 1 point each time they receive a pass from one of their wall players and then successfully pass to a different wall player in their team. Both middle players compete simultaneously. Rotate middle players regularly so everyone gets time in the centre. --- Technical: 1v1 Back to Goal Objective: Practise receiving the ball with back to goal, spinning away from a defender, and finishing quickly under pressure Set up multiple small areas, each with a goal or target at one end and a start line at the other. In each area: one blue attacker starts with back to goal, pinned by a red defender; one blue wall player stands at the start line with a ball. The wall player passes to the attacker. The attacker must use a spin or turn to escape the defender and score. If the red defender wins the ball back, they score a point by dribbling over the start line. Run in short repetitions and rotate roles regularly. --- Small-Sided Game: 3v3 Games Objective: Allow players to apply the 1v1 skills learned in the session in a free, enjoyable game environment with minimal coach interference Split players into teams of three. Play 3v3 small-sided games on appropriately sized pitches with small goals. Rotate teams so everyone gets multiple games. No stoppages — let the game flow. Minimal coaching intervention; allow players to problem-solve and express themselves. COACHING POINTS: - Protect the ball by keeping your body between the ball and the defender - Keep your head up to spot the defenders and find space - Change speed and direction to beat defenders - Scan before receiving the ball to know where your next pass is going - Use your body and arms to shield the ball from the opponent - Pass quickly after receiving — limit time on the ball - First touch — take the ball away from pressure, not into the defender - Use your arm out for protection to feel and hold off the defender - Use feints and body shape to disguise your turn - Once free, be explosive and finish quickly - Encourage players to attempt the 1v1 moves practised in the session - Let the game flow — praise effort, creativity, and bravery on the ball PROGRESSIONS: - Add a third defender to increase pressure. Reduce the size of the dribbling zone to make it harder. Allow eliminated players back in after reaching a juggling target to keep everyone active. - Increase the number of wall-to-wall passes required to score a point. Add a second ball to make the activity faster and more chaotic. Reduce the circle size to increase the challenge. - Allow the defender to press more aggressively once players are comfortable with the technique. Add a second defender to create a 1v2 overload challenge. Encourage players to choose from a variety of turns (spin, Cruyff, stepover). - Adjust pitch size to suit the number of players and energy levels. Add a neutral player to create a 4v3 overload if needed. Vary team pairings to keep competition fresh.
