TITLE: 2v1 Attacking Play

PLAYERS: 3–9 players

DURATION: 10 minutes

TAGS: U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, Adult, 9-a-side, 7-a-side, 5-a-side, Beginner, Developing, Advanced, Passing, Shooting, Small-Sided Games

DESCRIPTION: A continuous 2v1 drill in which two attackers combine to overcome a single defender and score. Focuses on exploiting numerical advantage through quick passing, movement off the ball, and decisive finishing.

OBJECTIVES:
- Teach attackers to exploit a numerical advantage
- Develop combination play and wall-pass technique
- Improve decision-making: when to pass vs. when to dribble in a 2v1

EQUIPMENT: balls, cones, goal (or mini-goals)

MAIN ACTIVITY: Arrange a starting point with two attackers facing one defender and a goal. The coach or a queue player serves the ball to the two attackers. Attackers attempt to score before the defender can stop them. After a shot, goal, or defensive clearance, rotate roles. Play continuously with new groups entering immediately.

COACHING POINTS:
- The ball-carrier draws the defender before releasing the pass
- The support player makes a well-timed run into space
- Pass when the defender commits; dribble when space is available
- Finish calmly — quality over power in the final action

PROGRESSIONS:
- Easier: allow unlimited time to set up the chance
- Start the defender further back to give attackers more time
- Harder: defender starts from a neutral position and sprints in
- Progress to 2v1+1 (second defender arrives after the halfway point)
