TITLE: 1v1 Attacking and Reaction Drill PLAYERS: 4 players TAGS: U9, U10, U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, U16, U18, 5-a-side, Developing, Advanced, Dribbling, Defending DESCRIPTION: A 1v1 attacking drill where the attacker makes quick faints, changes of direction, and bursts of speed while the defender must react quickly to their movements. OBJECTIVES: - Develop offensive feints, changes of direction, and explosive speed - Improve defensive reactions and closing speed - Practice transition runs after scoring or losing possession EQUIPMENT: Cones (for 40x30 grid, plus corner cones 5 yards from sidelines), Small goals or Pugg Goals (2), Soccer balls MAIN ACTIVITY: Create a 40x30 yard grid. Place a small goal on each end line. Place four cones in each corner about 5 yards from the sideline. Split into two groups — defenders on one sideline, attackers on the other with a supply of balls. The first attacker passes to the first defender. Both players move towards the centre, about 5 yards apart, passing back and forth. On the attacker's cue, they take off to attack either of the two small goals. The defender reacts to the attacker's movements. The attacker can fake and feint at any time. After play ends, both players run around the nearest corner cone and sprint to the opposite corner cone before the next pair goes. COACHING POINTS: - Attacker: use feints, change of direction, and speed to confuse the defender - Defender: react quickly and close down the attacker PROGRESSIONS: - Alternative start: defender plays ball into attacker immediately, forcing attacker to attack goal right away and defender to close down quickly - Switch lines so all players experience both attacking and defending
